Interestingly, Citroën’s single spoke design was an early effort to make steering wheels less lethal. The idea was that because the spoke curved into the column like that, with open space either side, the driver’s body would naturally be deflected away from the column, rather than be impaled on it. No idea how well it worked, but at least it looks cool.
